Monetary policy decisions

The European Central Bank has decided to maintain its three key interest rates at 2.50%, 2.65%, and 2.90% respectively. Energy prices have continued to rise, posing potential risks to both inflation and economic growth. The Governing Council noted that while underlying inflation has remained stable, the full impact of the energy shock is yet to be fully realized. The ECB is committed to ensuring that inflation stabilizes at its 2% target in the medium term, and will continue to navigate the current uncertainties on a data-dependent basis. The APP and PEPP portfolios are reducing at a measured pace, and the ECB stands ready to adjust its instruments as necessary to support its price stability mandate.

Bank of England sets out approach to tokenised collateral in central clearing

The Bank of England has initiated a consultation to support central counterparties (CCPs) in accepting tokenised forms of eligible collateral. This move aims to enhance the efficiency and management of collateral, particularly across different jurisdictions, and to support firms in responding more effectively to margin calls. The Bank asserts that the existing regulatory framework does not pose a barrier to CCPs accepting tokenised collateral, provided it meets the necessary standards. The proposed Supervisory Statement will provide clarity on how the Bank will assess applications involving tokenised collateral, aligning with the principle of same risk, same regulatory outcome. The consultation period closes on 12 February 2027, and the Bank invites responses from across the industry, including CCPs, market participants, and technology firms.
