Producer Price Indexes, Australia — September 2026

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released the Producer Price Indexes for September 2026, showing a 1.1% increase in final demand prices (excluding exports) for the quarter. Over the past twelve months, these prices have risen by 3.6%. Notably, the output price for building construction increased by 1.3%, primarily driven by non-residential construction. Conversely, the manufacturing industry saw a 1.3% decrease in output prices, largely due to a decline in petroleum and coal product manufacturing. Health care and social assistance prices also rose, with general practice medical services seeing a 2.5% increase, attributed to annual fee indexation for Medicare Benefits Schedule items.

OCR held at 2.75%

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand has decided to keep the Official Cash Rate at 2.75 percent, voting 4-3. Annual consumer price index inflation was 3.7 percent in the September quarter, down from 4.1 percent in June, but core inflation measures have increased to the top of the Committee's 1 to 3 percent target band. Global events, including rising fuel prices and a weaker exchange rate, are expected to push inflation to 4.4 percent in the December quarter. The Committee remains focused on returning inflation to the 2 percent target midpoint over the medium term, while acknowledging the risks and uncertainties in the near term. The New Zealand economy is recovering, with export-exposed sectors benefiting from high commodity prices, but domestic demand remains subdued outside of exporting centers.
